For me, the melding of words, melody and rhythm is a crowning human achievement. The popular song is as artful a blend of skill and feeling as a giant oil painting or the cut of a fabulous jewel or a motion picture or a classic novel.

So while many consider it shallow, and while it is certainly no way to earn a living, songwriting is nonetheless a noble pursuit.
